Long Division with Remainders

Long division when numbers do not divide exactly

  • Sometimes there is something left over — a remainder.
  • Long division shows all the working step by step.
  • Steps: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down. Repeat.
  • The remainder is whatever is left at the end.
  • Write it as "r" followed by the number left over.

Example: 347 / 5

  1. Write 5 outside. Write 347 inside.
  2. 5 into 3 does not go. Combine: 5 into 34 = 6. Write 6.
  3. Multiply: 6 x 5 = 30. Subtract: 34 - 30 = 4.
  4. Bring down the 7: now have 47.
  5. 5 into 47 = 9. Write 9. Multiply: 9 x 5 = 45.
  6. Subtract: 47 - 45 = 2. No more digits to bring down.
  7. Answer: 347 / 5 = 69 r 2.

Let us try: 628 / 6

  • 6 into 6 = 1. Write 1. Multiply: 1 x 6 = 6. Subtract: 6 - 6 = 0.
  • Bring down the 2. 6 into 2 does not go. Write 0.
  • Multiply: 0 x 6 = 0. Subtract: 2 - 0 = 2.
  • Bring down the 8: now have 28.
  • 6 into 28 = 4. Write 4. Multiply: 4 x 6 = 24. Subtract: 28 - 24 = 4.
  • Answer: 628 / 6 = 104 r 4.

Now try these yourself

  • 253 / 4 = ? (Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — repeat.)
  • 415 / 7 = ? (7 into 41 = 5 r 6. Bring down 5: 65. 7 into 65 = 9 r 2.)
  • 589 / 8 = ? (Work through each step carefully.)
  • Remember: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down.
