Dividing 3-digit numbers
- This uses the same bus stop method as 2-digit division.
- There are now 3 digits to work through.
- Start from the left and work right.
- Carry any remainders to the next digit.
- Take your time — one digit at a time.
Example: 156 / 3
- Write 3 outside. Write 156 inside.
- Hundreds: 3 into 1 does not go. Combine with next digit: 15.
- 3 into 15 = 5. Write 5 on top.
- Ones: 3 into 6 = 2. Write 2 on top.
- Answer: 156 / 3 = 52.
Let us try: 248 / 4
- Write 4 outside. Write 248 inside.
- Hundreds: 4 into 2 does not go. Combine: 24.
- 4 into 24 = 6. Write 6 on top.
- Ones: 4 into 8 = 2. Write 2 on top.
- Answer: 248 / 4 = 62.
Now try these yourself
- 126 / 3 = ? (3 into 12 = 4, then 3 into 6 = 2)
- 175 / 5 = ? (5 into 17 = 3 r 2, carry 2 to make 25, 5 into 25 = 5)
- 432 / 4 = ? (4 into 4 = 1, 4 into 3 needs carry, 4 into 32 = 8)
- Work left to right. Carry remainders to the next digit.
