2-Digit / 1-Digit Short Division

What is short division?

  • Short division (bus stop method) divides one digit at a time.
  • Draw the bus stop shape: the divisor sits outside, the number inside.
  • Work from left to right.
  • Divide each digit. If there is a remainder, carry it to the next digit.
  • Write the answer on top.

Example: 84 / 4

  1. Write 4 outside the bus stop. Write 84 inside.
  2. Start with the tens digit: 4 into 8 = 2. Write 2 on top.
  3. No remainder, so move to the next digit.
  4. Ones digit: 4 into 4 = 1. Write 1 on top.
  5. Answer: 84 / 4 = 21.

Let us try: 96 / 3

  • Write 3 outside. Write 96 inside.
  • Tens: 3 into 9 = 3. Write 3 on top. No remainder.
  • Ones: 3 into 6 = 2. Write 2 on top.
  • Answer: 96 / 3 = 32.
  • Each step is just one small division.

Now try these yourself

  • 68 / 2 = ? (2 into 6, then 2 into 8)
  • 93 / 3 = ? (3 into 9, then 3 into 3)
  • 72 / 4 = ? (4 into 7 = 1 r 3, carry 3 to make 32, 4 into 32 = 8)
  • Remember: if a digit does not divide evenly, carry the remainder.
