Ratio Sharing — Multiply & Divide Pathway
Sharing in a ratio
- A ratio tells you how to split a total into unequal parts.
- First add the ratio numbers to find total parts.
- Divide the amount by total parts to find one part.
- Then multiply by each ratio number.
Example: Share 40 in the ratio 3:5
- Step 1: Total parts = 3 + 5 = 8.
- Step 2: One part = 40 / 8 = 5.
- Step 3: First share = 3 x 5 = 15.
- Step 4: Second share = 5 x 5 = 25. Check: 15 + 25 = 40.
Your turn
- Try: Share 30 in the ratio 2:3.
- Total parts = 2 + 3 = 5.
- One part = 30 / 5 = 6.
- Shares: 2 x 6 = 12, and 3 x 6 = 18. Check: 12 + 18 = 30.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to add the ratio parts first. Total parts = sum of all ratio numbers.
- Dividing by one ratio number instead of the total. Always divide by the TOTAL parts first.
Real-Life Example
Two siblings share 40 pounds in the ratio 3:5. Total parts = 3 + 5 = 8. One part = 40 / 8 = 5 pounds. First gets 3 x 5 = 15 pounds, second gets 5 x 5 = 25 pounds.
Extra Support Hints
- Always find one part first, then multiply by each ratio number.
- Check by adding: 15 + 25 = 40. It should match the original amount.
