Equal Groups — Multiply & Divide Pathway

What are equal groups?

  • Equal groups means the same number of things in each group.
  • Multiplication counts how many there are altogether.
  • 3 groups of 4 means there are 4 in each group, and there are 3 groups.
  • We write this as 3 x 4.

Example: 4 groups of 2

  1. Step 1: Draw 4 groups.
  2. Step 2: Put 2 in each group.
  3. Step 3: Count them all: 2, 4, 6, 8.
  4. Answer: 4 x 2 = 8.

Your turn

  • Think: 3 groups of 5.
  • How many in each group? 5.
  • Count: 5, 10, 15.
  • So 3 x 5 = 15.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing the number of groups with the amount in each group. 3 groups of 4 means 3 groups, each containing 4.
  • Forgetting that multiplication gives the total. Always count all objects to check.

Real-Life Example

A baker puts 4 cupcakes in each box. If they fill 5 boxes, how many cupcakes is that? 5 groups of 4 = 5 x 4 = 20 cupcakes.

Extra Support Hints

  • Draw the groups on paper so you can see them.
  • Use counters, coins or buttons to make the groups real.
  • Say it out loud: "3 groups of 4" helps you remember what the numbers mean.
