Column Multiplication — Multiply & Divide Pathway
Introduction to column multiplication
- Column multiplication is a neat written method.
- Write the numbers in columns: ones under ones, tens under tens.
- Multiply starting from the ones column.
- Carry any tens into the next column.
Example: 34 x 7
- Step 1: Write 34 above, 7 below, draw a line.
- Step 2: 7 x 4 = 28. Write 8, carry the 2.
- Step 3: 7 x 3 = 21, plus carried 2 = 23. Write 23.
- Answer: 238.
Your turn
- Try: 26 x 4.
- 4 x 6 = 24. Write 4, carry 2.
- 4 x 2 = 8, plus 2 = 10.
- Answer: 104.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to carry. If the ones answer is 10 or more, carry the tens digit to the next column.
- Starting from the left instead of the right. Column multiplication always starts from the ones column.
Real-Life Example
A ticket costs 7 pounds and 34 people buy one. 34 x 7: 7 x 4 = 28 (write 8, carry 2), 7 x 3 = 21 plus 2 = 23. Answer: 238 pounds.
Extra Support Hints
- Line up the numbers carefully — ones under ones, tens under tens.
- Write the carried digit small above the next column so you do not forget it.
