3-Digit x 2-Digit — Multiply & Divide Pathway

Multiplying a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number

  • This uses the same column method as 2-digit x 2-digit.
  • Multiply by the ones first, then by the tens.
  • Add a zero placeholder for the tens row.
  • Add both rows together for the final answer.

Example: 213 x 24

  1. Step 1: 213 x 4 = 852.
  2. Step 2: 213 x 20 = 4260.
  3. Step 3: Add: 852 + 4260 = 5112.
  4. Answer: 5112.

Your turn

  • Try: 124 x 13.
  • 124 x 3 = 372.
  • 124 x 10 = 1240.
  • Add: 372 + 1240 = 1612.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting the zero placeholder in the tens row. This shifts all digits one place left.
  • Losing track of carries across three columns. Work slowly and check each column.

Real-Life Example

A cinema has 213 seats and sells tickets for 24 pounds each for a charity screening. 213 x 24: 213 x 4 = 852, 213 x 20 = 4260, 852 + 4260 = 5112 pounds raised.

Extra Support Hints

  • Do the ones row first, then the tens row (with the zero), then add.
  • Estimate first: 200 x 25 = 5000, so your answer should be near 5000.
