2-Digit x 2-Digit — Multiply & Divide Pathway
Multiplying two 2-digit numbers
- Use the column method with two rows of working.
- First multiply by the ones digit.
- Then multiply by the tens digit (add a zero placeholder).
- Finally add the two rows together.
Example: 23 x 14
- Step 1: 23 x 4 = 92 (ones row).
- Step 2: 23 x 10 = 230 (tens row).
- Step 3: Add: 92 + 230 = 322.
- Answer: 23 x 14 = 322.
Your turn
- Try: 31 x 12.
- 31 x 2 = 62.
- 31 x 10 = 310.
- Add: 62 + 310 = 372.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting the zero placeholder for the tens row. The second row must start one place to the left.
- Adding the rows incorrectly. Line up the digits carefully before adding.
Real-Life Example
A school has 23 classrooms with 14 chairs in each. 23 x 14: 23 x 4 = 92, 23 x 10 = 230, 92 + 230 = 322 chairs.
Extra Support Hints
- Write a zero at the end of the second row to remind you it is the tens row.
- Check the answer is sensible: 23 x 14 is roughly 20 x 15 = 300.
