2-Digit / 1-Digit — Multiply & Divide Pathway

Dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number

  • Split the number into parts that divide easily.
  • Divide each part, then add the answers together.
  • Or use the bus stop method (short division).
  • Example: 84 / 4 means how many 4s in 84.

Example: 72 / 3

  1. Step 1: How many 3s in 7? Answer: 2, remainder 1.
  2. Step 2: Carry the 1 to make 12.
  3. Step 3: How many 3s in 12? Answer: 4.
  4. Answer: 72 / 3 = 24.

Your turn

  • Try: 96 / 4.
  • How many 4s in 9? Answer: 2, remainder 1.
  • Carry to make 16. How many 4s in 16? Answer: 4.
  • Answer: 24.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Working right to left. Division works left to right, the opposite of addition and subtraction.
  • Forgetting to carry the remainder to the next digit.

Real-Life Example

A class of 72 children needs to stand in 3 equal rows. 72 / 3: 3 into 7 = 2 remainder 1, carry 1 to make 12, 3 into 12 = 4. Answer: 24 children per row.

Extra Support Hints

  • Write the bus stop shape clearly so the numbers stay in the right columns.
  • Check by multiplying: 24 x 3 = 72. If it matches, you are correct.
