Functional Skills Maths: Multiplication (Level 2)

Multiply using times tables and partitioning

Times Tables to 12

  • Knowing times tables lets you multiply quickly.
  • Example: 7 × 8 = 56. 9 × 6 = 54.
  • Use the pattern: 6 × 7 = 7 × 6 (order does not matter).
  • Practise by counting in the number: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30…

Multiplying 2-Digit by 1-Digit

  • Split (partition) the 2-digit number into tens and ones.
  • Multiply each part separately, then add.
  • Example: 23 × 4. Split: 20 × 4 = 80. 3 × 4 = 12. 80 + 12 = 92.

Multiplication in Real Life

  • Total cost = price per item × number of items.
  • Example: 6 books at £4 each = 6 × £4 = £24.
  • Total items = items per box × number of boxes.

Worked Examples

Example 1: 24 × 3

  1. Split 24 into 20 and 4.
  2. 20 × 3 = 60.
  3. 4 × 3 = 12.
  4. 60 + 12 = 72. Answer: 24 × 3 = 72

Example 2: 5 bags with 14 items each

  1. 5 × 14. Split 14 into 10 and 4.
  2. 5 × 10 = 50. 5 × 4 = 20.
  3. 50 + 20 = 70.
  4. Answer: 70 items in total.

Practice Questions

  • 32 × 4 = ?
    Hint: Split: 30×4=120. 2×4=8. 120+8=128.
    Answer: 128
  • 21 × 6 = ?
    Hint: Split: 20×6=120. 1×6=6. 120+6=126.
    Answer: 126
  • 15 items per box × 3 boxes = ?
    Hint: Split 15: 10×3=30. 5×3=15. 30+15=45.
    Answer: 45
