Functional Skills Maths: Division (Level 2)
Use short division and work with remainders
Short Division (Bus Stop)
- Write the number inside a "bus stop" shape.
- Divide each digit from left to right.
- Example: 84 ÷ 4. 8 ÷ 4 = 2. 4 ÷ 4 = 1. Answer: 21.
Division with Remainders
- Sometimes a number does not divide exactly.
- The amount left over is called the remainder.
- Example: 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2. (5×3=15, 17−15=2 left)
Division in Real Life
- Sharing costs: £48 split between 4 people = £48 ÷ 4 = £12 each.
- Packing: 26 items in boxes of 4 = 6 full boxes, 2 items left over.
- Time: 60 minutes ÷ 4 tasks = 15 minutes each.
