Functional Skills Maths: Addition (Level 2)
Add 2-digit numbers and money using column method
Adding Bigger Numbers
- Write numbers in columns — ones above ones, tens above tens.
- Add the ones column first, then the tens.
- Example: 45 + 32. Ones: 5+2=7. Tens: 4+3=7. Answer: 77.
Carrying (Regrouping)
- If the ones column adds up to 10 or more, carry 1 to the tens.
- Example: 47 + 35. Ones: 7+5=12. Write 2, carry 1.
- Tens: 4+3+1(carried)=8. Answer: 82.
Adding Money
- Line up the decimal points (the dot).
- Add pence (right of dot) first, then pounds.
- Example: £3.50 + £2.45 = £5.95.
- If pence add to 100 or more, carry £1 to the pounds column.
