Functional Skills Maths: Multiplication (Level 1)
Count equal groups using 2s, 5s and 10s
Equal Groups
- Multiplication means making equal groups.
- We use the × sign.
- 3 × 2 means 3 groups of 2.
- 3 groups of 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.
The 2 Times Table
- Counting in 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
- 1 × 2 = 2. 2 × 2 = 4. 3 × 2 = 6.
- 4 × 2 = 8. 5 × 2 = 10. 6 × 2 = 12.
- Double a number = multiply by 2.
The 5 and 10 Times Tables
- Counting in 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.
- 5s always end in 5 or 0.
- Counting in 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.
- 10s always end in 0.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 3 × 2
- 3 groups of 2.
- Count in 2s: 2, 4, 6.
- Answer: 3 × 2 = 6
Example 2: 4 × 5
- 4 groups of 5.
- Count in 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20.
- Answer: 4 × 5 = 20

Hint: 2 groups of 2. Count in 2s: 2, 4.
Answer: 4 - 3 × 5 = ?
Hint: 3 groups of 5. Count in 5s: 5, 10, 15.
Answer: 15 - 2 × 10 = ?
