Listening to Simple Information

Listen carefully and pick out key details.

Listen well

  • Look at the person talking.
  • Keep quiet while they speak.

Pick out details

  • Listen for names, times and places.
  • Ask them to repeat if you are not sure.

Examples

Example 1

  1. Speaker says: “The bus leaves at nine.”
  2. Key detail: the time is nine.
  3. You can say: “The bus leaves at nine.”

Example 2

  1. Speaker says: “My name is Anna.”
  2. Key detail: the name is Anna.
  3. You can say: “Your name is Anna.”

Activities

  • Learner: Listen while your helper reads a short sentence. Then say one key detail back.
    Helper: Read a short sentence with one clear detail, such as “The shop opens at ten.” Ask the learner to say the key detail back.
  • Learner: Listen to your helper say a name and a time. Say both back.
    Helper: Say a name and a time, such as “Sara is here at three.” Ask the learner to say both details back.
  • Learner: Listen to a short message and say what it is about.
    Helper: Say a short message, such as “Lunch is in the kitchen.” Ask the learner what the message is about.
