Joining a Simple Discussion

Join in politely

  • Wait for a pause, then speak.
  • Say something about the topic.

Listen and respond

  • Listen to what others say.
  • You can agree or add a new idea.

Examples

Example 1

  1. Topic: “What do we do at the weekend?”
  2. Someone says: “I go to the park.”
  3. You can say: “I go to the park too.” or “I like to bake.”

Example 2

  1. Topic: “What food is best for a picnic?”
  2. Someone says: “I like sandwiches.”
  3. You can say: “I think fruit is nice too.”

Activities

  • Learner: Join a short discussion with your helper about a simple topic. Share one idea.
    Helper: Pick a simple topic, such as “What do you like to do at home?” Share an idea, then ask the learner to share one.
  • Learner: Listen to your helper’s idea, then add your own idea about the same topic.
    Helper: Say one idea about the topic. Ask the learner to say their idea about the same topic.
  • Learner: Practise agreeing or adding a new idea politely.
    Helper: Say an idea, such as “I think weekends are fun.” Ask the learner to agree or add a new idea, such as “Yes, I like the park.”
