Giving Simple Answers

Answer questions clearly and in full where you can.

Answer the question

  • Listen to the whole question.
  • Say an answer that matches it.

Speak clearly

  • Use a clear voice.
  • Look at the person asking.

Examples

Example 1

  1. Question: “What is your name?”
  2. Answer: “My name is Sam.”
  3. The answer matches the question.

Example 2

  1. Question: “What day is it today?”
  2. Answer: “Today is Monday.”
  3. The answer is clear and simple.

Activities

  • Learner: Answer your helper’s question about yourself in a full sentence.
    Helper: Ask the learner a simple personal question, such as “What is your favourite food?” Encourage a full sentence answer.
  • Learner: Answer your helper’s question about today.
    Helper: Ask a question about today, such as “What is the weather like?” Encourage a clear answer.
  • Learner: Answer a question and then ask one back.
    Helper: Ask the learner a question, such as “Do you like reading?” After they answer, ask them to ask you the same question back.
