Following Spoken Instructions

Listen to instructions and do them in order.

Listen first

  • Let the person finish speaking.
  • Do not start until they have finished.

Do the steps in order

  • Do step 1 first.
  • Then do step 2.

Examples

Example 1

  1. Instruction: “Open the book. Turn to page 5.”
  2. First open the book.
  3. Then turn to page 5.

Example 2

  1. Instruction: “Stand up. Come to the door.”
  2. First stand up.
  3. Then come to the door.

Activities

  • Learner: Listen to two instructions from your helper and do them in order.
    Helper: Give two simple instructions in order, such as “Pick up the pencil. Put it on the desk.” Let the learner do them.
  • Learner: Listen to three instructions and do them in the right order.
    Helper: Give three simple instructions, such as “Stand up. Walk to the door. Stop.” Let the learner do them in order.
  • Learner: Tell your helper if you need them to repeat an instruction.
    Helper: Give an instruction and pause. If the learner looks unsure, ask them to say “Can you say that again?”
