Safety Information — Deep Dive Learning

Read and understand safety signs, labels, and warnings

Why is safety information important?

  • Safety information helps prevent accidents and injuries.
  • It appears on products, in workplaces, and in public spaces.
  • Signs, labels, and warnings all give safety information.
  • Ignoring safety information can lead to serious harm.
  • Understanding it helps you stay safe and protect others.

Common safety signs

  • Warning signs: yellow/orange with an exclamation mark — "Caution: wet floor."
  • Danger signs: red — "Danger: high voltage." Do not go near.
  • Prohibition signs: red circle with a line — "No entry." Do not do this.
  • Mandatory signs: blue circle — "Wear hard hat." You must do this.
  • Emergency signs: green — "Emergency exit." Use in an emergency.

Reading product warnings

  • Products like medicines and cleaning products have safety labels.
  • "Keep out of reach of children" — store safely away from children.
  • "Do not use near flames" — keep away from fire sources.
  • "Use in a well-ventilated area" — open windows or use outside.
  • Always read product labels before use.

What to do in an emergency

  • Know where the nearest exit is in any building.
  • If there is a fire: leave immediately, do not collect belongings, call 999.
  • Emergency number in the UK is 999 (police, fire, ambulance).
  • Non-emergency: call 111 for health advice or 101 for police.
  • Stay calm and follow instructions from staff or emergency services.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Reading a cleaning product label

  1. Label says: "Harmful if swallowed. Keep out of reach of children."
  2. Meaning: this product is dangerous to drink.
  3. Action: store in a locked cupboard away from children.
  4. Label says: "Wear gloves when using."
  5. Action: put on rubber gloves before handling.

Example 2: Understanding a workplace sign

  1. Sign: yellow triangle with exclamation mark — "Caution: slippery floor."
  2. Meaning: the floor may be wet and you could slip.
  3. Action: walk carefully. Use handrail if available.
  4. Do not run or rush in this area.

Practice Problems

  • A sign says "No entry." What does this mean?
Hint: No entry is a prohibition sign.
Answer: You are not allowed to go through this way
  • A medicine label says "Take with food." Why is this instruction important?
Hint: Some medicines cause problems on an empty stomach.
Answer: Taking without food may cause stomach upset or reduce effectiveness
  • You smell smoke in a building. What should you do first?
Hint: Think about the fire evacuation process.
Answer: Alert others and leave the building immediately via the nearest exit

Challenge Question

A cleaning product label says: "Causes serious eye damage. Harmful if swallowed. Keep away from heat sources. Use in well-ventilated areas only." List ALL the safety rules you must follow.

Hint: There are 4 separate safety instructions hidden in the text. Look for each one.

Answer: 1. Protect your eyes (wear goggles). 2. Do not swallow. 3. Keep away from heat/flames. 4. Use only where there is fresh air/open windows.

Each statement is a separate hazard warning. You must follow ALL of them, not just one.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mistake: Thinking warning signs only apply to workplaces
Correction: Warning signs and safety labels are everywhere: home, shops, medicines, cleaning products
Why: Safety information protects everyone in all settings.
  • Mistake: Ignoring small print on packaging
Correction: Small print often contains the most important safety and allergy information
Why: Manufacturers put warnings there because they are legally required to.
  • Mistake: Confusing "warning" (be careful) with "prohibition" (do not do this)
Correction: Warnings alert you to be cautious. Prohibitions mean you must NOT do something.
Why: A warning triangle means caution. A red circle with a line means forbidden.
